Fat always seems to be the villain when it comes to healthy eating. However no human can function without any fat. The trick is to know your fats.
Our bodies are able to manufacture many of the fatty acids we need however the body is unable to manufacture Omega-6 or Omega-3 we must eat these in our diets
What do Omega-6 and Omega-3 do?
Actually the question should probably be what do they not do?
Omega-6 and Omega-3 are vital for proper functioning of cardiovascular, reproductive, immune and nervous systems.
They are used to manufacture and repair cells – you want to look young? Omega-3 helps your skin absorb nutrients and expel harmful waste products – leaving you with healthy, glowing skin (and nails and hair)
It is also worth noting that Omega-6 and Omega-3 are used to manufacture some very important hormones in the body including prostaglandins.
Prosta-what? You ask… Prostaglandins are essential compounds used by the body to
Fight infection (flus, colds, covid…)
Regulate inflammation (aches and pains)
Regulate blood pressure
Regulate body temperature
Support smooth muscle contraction
Manage blood clotting
Manage gastric secretions
Symptoms you might be running low
Some of the symptoms you might experience if you are running low on omega fats include
Joint pain
Brittle nails
Dry, lifeless or breaking hair
Poor concentration
Fatigue
Insomnia
So how can you get Omega-6 and Omega-3 in your diet?
Omega-6 can be found in nuts, sunflower seeds, wheat germ
Omega-3 can be found in oily fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, wheat germ, nuts, soya, linseeds, chia seeds, spinach, flaxseed
